The Selkirk Saints rallied back from a second-period deficit to edge the Eastern Washington University Eagles 5-3 in B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey Saturday night at the Castlegar Recreation Complex. The win extended Selkirk’s BCIHL-record streak for wins to start a season to 11 and maintained the Saints’ tight grip on first place in the league standings.”With two weeks between games we knew there might be some rust coming into tonight’s game and we saw that early with a couple of mental errors that Eastern made us pay for,” said Saints head coach Jeff Dubois.”But it was a good experience for us to get behind at home and have to raise our game and battle back.””We got better as the game went on and it was nice to see our fourth line come through with the winning goal,” Dubois added. “You don’t want to have to count on coming from behind on a regular basis, but tonight we’re pleased with the character we showed in the third period.”For the first time this season the Saints tailed at both intermissions. But a third period rally sparked by a timely 5-on-3 penalty kill lifted the home side. The Eagles took their first of three leads on the night midway through the first period when Ryan Pajimola intercepted a neutral zone pass and blasted a shot past Selkirk netminder Alex Sirard.Cody Fidgett drew the hosts even minutes later on a power-play, but EWU went ahead once more with 1:54 remaining in the frame when Uriah Machuga capitalized on a Saints turnover and scored from the high slot. The game remained tight in the second with Logan Proulx and Machuga trading power-play goals less than two minutes apart. And Selkirk came up big late in the frame, killing a two-man advantage for the final 54 seconds of the period in order to squeak into intermission down a single goal. After continuing their solid work on the penalty kill in the opening minute of the third period, the Saints found the momentum-changing goal they’d been searching for.Beau Taylor, who was playing at centre in the absence of injured linemate Thomas Hardy, won an offensive zone face-off straight forward and passed across the top of the crease to Fidgett for a tap-in equalizer. The eventual game winner would follow just 53 seconds later, as Connor Stephens pounced on a rebound from a Ben Starbuck wrap-around and beat EWU starter Jason Greenwell. And the Saints allowed their visitors few chances for the remainder of the third period, outshooting the Eagles 13-3 before Connor McLaughlin scored into an empty net to put the finishing touches on the win. Alex Sirard picked up his seventh win in as many appearances for the Saints, making 16 saves including a breakaway stop on Ryan Pajimola late in the first period that kept his team within one heading to intermission. Greenwell faced 37 shots and took the loss for EWU. Selkirk returns to home ice for their final game of 2012 when the University of Victoria visits Castlegar on Saturday, December 1st.Faceoff is set for 7:30 PM.SAINTS NOTES: A victory against the Vikes next weekend would see Selkirk tie the BCIHL’s all-time longest winning streak at 12 games. Ironically, UVic set the current record during the 2006/07 season.
Fixing a dripping tap can save up to 550 litres of water a week – that’s 2 200 litres a month, and a whopping 28 600 litres a year, from a single tap. (Image: Mary Alexander)South Africa is facing one of its driest summers in years, with drought hitting many regions of the country. In response, a number of municipalities have introduced restrictions to save water. Here are some easy ways you can play your part and cut down on the water you use at home.General• Fix all dripping taps, inside and outside your home. Fixing a single tap can save up to 550 litres of water a week.• Know where the water shut-off valve for your property is, so you can turn it off if you have a burst pipe or other water emergency.Indoors• Teach your children to turn taps off taps tightly. • Keep an eye on your water bill. If the charges go up suddenly, you could have a leak somewhere in your home.Toilet• Only flush when you need to.• Don’t use the toilet for rubbish. Throw used tissues in the dustbin instead of flushing them away.• Fill a 500ml water bottle (cold drink “buddy” size) with water, seal it tightly and put it in the toilet cistern away from all moving parts. This will save 500ml of water every time you flush.• Replace your old toilet with a water-efficient one, preferably a toilet with a 9-litre cistern.• Make sure the washer in the cistern is fitted properly to stop leaks.Don’t use the toilet as a rubbish bin, and only flush when you need to. (Image: DirtyBoxFace, Flickr)Hand basin• Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Better still, brush your teeth in the shower.• Don’t turn the tap on full.• Don’t leave the tap running while you rinse your hair or shave.• Wash your hands with the plug in place.Always turn the taps off when brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your hair. (Image: Gabriel Rocha, Flickr)Bath• Don’t fill the bath to a water level higher than 20 centimetres – 10 centimetres is better.• Keep bath water to fill your toilet cistern, for cleaning around your home – floors, cupboards and carpets – or for watering your garden.• If you have small children, let them bath together.Shower• If your shower fills a 5-litre bucket in under 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model that only delivers six to 10 litres a minute. • Don’t shower for longer than five minutes.• Shortening your shower by a minute or two saves up to 600 litres a month. • Switch off the water between soaping and rinsing your body and your hair. • Put a bucket in your shower to collect the water, and use it in the toilet cistern, for cleaning around your home – floors, cupboards and carpets – or for watering your garden.Test your shower head by placing a 5-litres bucket under it. If the bucket fills in less than 20 seconds, replace the shower head with a water-efficient model. (Image: Steven Depolo, Flickr)Cooking• Only put as much water into your kettle as you need. • When boiling water on the stove cover the pot with a lid. • Don’t use running water to thaw food. It’s safer to defrost it in the fridge.• Wash fruit and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. • Collect the water used to rinse fruit and vegetables and use it in the toilet cistern or the garden.Only put as much water in the kettle as you need. Too much water will be lost to steam and evaporation. (Image: Benjamin Lehman, Flickr)Dishwashing• When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water. • Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean. • Buy a water-efficient dishwasher. • Fully load the dishwasher before use. Use an economy cycle. • If you have already rinsed your dishes then run the load on a shorter cycle.Clothes washing• Only wash a full load of laundry.• If your washing isn’t very dirty then don’t use the pre-rinse cycle. • Buy a washing machine that is water efficient. • Buy a washing machine that has different cycle options. This lets you choose a cycle that is more water efficient when heavy-duty cleaning is not needed. • Front loaders are more water efficient than top loaders or twin tubs. • Choose a machine with load detection. If there isn’t enough washing to do a full load, the machine will only use the amount of water needed.Only wash a full load of laundry, and if it isn’t very dirty then skip the pre-wash cycle. (Image: Chiot’s Run, Flickr)Outdoors• We’re more likely to notice leaks indoors, but don’t forget to check outdoor taps for leaks.• Wash your car with a bucket of water instead of a running hosepipe. Or use a commercial car wash that recycles water. • Use a broom to clean your yard and driveway, instead of a hosepipe.Pool• During the drought crisis, do not refill your pool. A number of municipalities have already placed restrictions on filling pools.Grow indigenous South African plants such as fynbos in your garden, instead of thirsty exotic plants. Our plants are adapted to the country’s naturally dry conditions, and use less water. (Image: Zoe Shuttleworth, Flickr)Garden• Only water your garden after 6pm and before 6am. Watering during the heat of the day wastes water to evaporation.• Adjust sprinklers to only water your garden, not paved areas or the road outside.• Better still, water your garden by hand with a watering can or a hose pipe. Fit a nozzle to the hose so you can shut the water off when it’s not needed, and keep the water pressure low.• Replace thirsty grass lawns with water-wise shrubs and groundcovers. • Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting. Taller grass shades the ground and keeps in more moisture.• Collect rainwater from your roof to water your garden. • Don’t water your garden on windy days or most of the water will blow away or evaporate. • Grow only indigenous South African plants in your garden. They use less water.• Water only when needed. More plants die from over-watering than from under-watering. • When you give your pet fresh water, don’t throw away the old water. Use it to water your garden.Compiled by Mary Alexander. Sources: City of Johannesburg, Rand Water, City of Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay Metro
Self-driving cars are going to be fitted with a whole lot of sensors, chips, and other electronics, so it makes sense to check that all of this works in extreme environments. That’s why Waymo sent its self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans to California’s Death Valley this summer, which has the highest recorded temperature in the world, at 134F.See Also: Google narrows case against Uber as court date nearsWaymo had already conducted “extensive tests” in an aerothermal wind tunnel prior to the trip, which is able to mimic extreme heat and cold. After almost a year of controlled environment tests, it gave the green light to the heat-seeking journey. The minivan took a road trip from Davis Dam to Las Vegas to Death Valley, testing the car at each step of the way. Davis Dam has steep desert roads, Las Vegas has long waits in traffic, and Death Valley is the ultimate extreme heat test. From Tahoe to the desertAutomakers have conducted extreme weather tests for decades, but the self-driving car provides more worries, as most of the electronics produce their own heat. Waymo did not say if it has added any other features to the car to reduce the heat or better ventilate the car.Waymo carried out similar tests at low temperatures in Lake Tahoe earlier this year.Even though the self-driving cars are not for sale, Waymo is letting people test the cars in Phoenix, Arizona. Before too long, that may turn into a ride-sharing or shuttle platform, available in many U.S. cities. It may be looking to have everything covered before riders start paying for their rides. Pakistani batsman Babar Azam had the misfortune of having to bowl to his compatriot Shoaib Malik in a T10 charity match, when the latter decided to celebrate Christmas letting off the fireworks in the stadium. The former Pakistan captain, Malik smashed Azam for six sixes in the seventh over of the first innings. Azam though had his revenge as he blasted a hundred off just 26 balls.Malik was representing Shahid Afridi Foundation Red team, and helped them to post 201 in 10 overs. But Shahid Afridi Foundation Green, thanks to a crazed Azam knock, registered a nine-wicket victory.Shoaib Malik’s six sixes -Shoaib Malik smashes 6 sixes in an over off the bowling of Babar Azam in the Shahid Afridi Foundation charity match in Faisalabad #Cricket pic.twitter.com/lV1b4s4cfY- Saj Sadiq (@Saj_PakPassion) December 24, 2017Babar Azam’s 100 off 26 balls -Babar Azam’s excellent 100 off 26 balls at the Shahid Afridi Foundation match in Faisalabad #Cricket pic.twitter.com/dsKLLuyDE4- Saj Sadiq (@Saj_PakPassion) December 24, 2017Earlier in December, Shahid Afridi began his T10 cricket stint with a bang as an inspired bowling spell helped the Pakhtoons pick up a victory in the newest format of the game. The veteran all-rounder picked up a hat-trick with the first three balls he bowled to help his team beat a Maratha Arabians side captained by Virender Sehwag by 25 runs.Talking about his new experience, he said: “I really enjoyed it, it is totally different,” Afridi said after the game. “The boys did really well.”advertisement”If the ICC is thinking of cricket in the Olympics, T10 could be the right format because the match gets over in 90 minutes. So it’s like football where the result will come (in quick time). Also, one or two people can win you a match so even the smaller countries can produce those players,” he said.Rohit Sharma, who equalled the record for the fastest century in T20Is in the second match against Sri Lanka, will be heaving a sigh of relief as Azam’s knock won’t stand as it was not an official match. Rohit’s 35-ball ton is the fastest century, along with David Miller, who achieved the feat against Bangladesh at Potchefstroom in October 2017. The Mumbai dasher brought up his second T20 ton on the 12th over of the bowling off Angelo Mathews with a boundary. His whirlwind of an innings ended when he fell for 118 off just 43 balls to Dushmantha Chameera in the 12th over. This was the fastest hundred byan Indian batsman in the format. The previous one was held by KL Rahuloff 46 balls against West Indies in 2016 at Lauderhill. The Hitman blasted 10 sixes and 12 fours in his innings.

Hon Dr Rufus Ewing and Border Control and Labour Minister DonHue Gardiner on Wednesday left to attend the Pre-Joint Ministerial Council meeting set in Bermuda. The Office of the Premier provided the presentation by Premier Ewing at the two day session; he spoke of the common challenges and how they can be an impetus for getting what is most needed per nation from the British.“By and large there are number of areas that are common that we can say that as Overseas Territories we can sit with our heads together and solve. Also on the issue of cooperation between countries, best practices between countries, there are some countries that are more advanced and have gone through with some countries that have yet to go through and so that there is a lot that we can learn from Bermuda, a lot that we can learn from Cayman Islands who might have gone through this before and developed systems that we can benefit from so it is about that kind of relationship as sister overseas territories.”During the two-day meeting, the Territories Leaders are also expected to make a unified statement on their approach to Beneficial Ownership, which will be forwarded to the United Kingdom. Smoke billowing from the site of a downed Sukhoi-25 fighter jet in the northwest province of Idlib in Syria. Rebel fighters shot down a Russian plane over Syria’s northwest Idlib province and captured its pilot. Photo: AFPA Russian pilot was killed Saturday in fighting with Islamists after his warplane was downed over northwest Syria, Russia’s defence ministry and a monitor said.Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a powerful jihadist-dominated alliance said, on an affiliated media channel it had shot down the plane but made no mention of the pilot.“We were able to bring down the Russian warplane with a shoulder-fired missile above Saraqib in Idlib this afternoon,” said Mahmoud al-Turkmani who, according to the statement, heads HTS’s “air defence brigade.”He said the attack was in retaliation for a ferocious bombing campaign by Russian warplanes over Idlib.HTS, which is dominated by Al-Qaeda’s former affiliate in Syria, controls Idlib and has sought to fight back a ferocious Russian-backed assault by Syrian government troops. An AFP correspondent who arrived at the crash site on Saturday saw what appeared to be the charred remains of the plane, including a wing with a red star still visible.Firefighters arrived to put out flames that had been spewing dark smoke into the wintry Syrian sky.The Russian defence ministry confirmed that the Su-25 aircraft was shot down over Idlib province and said the pilot was killed “in fighting against terrorists.”‘Killed fighting’“A Russian Su-25 aircraft crashed during a flight over the Idlib de-escalation zone. The pilot had enough time to announce he had ejected into the zone,” the defence ministry said.“The pilot was killed in fighting against terrorists,” it said, quoted by Russian agencies. It added that “according to preliminary reports, the plane was shot down by a portable anti-aircraft missile system.”The US State Department said it was “deeply concerned” at reports of such a weapon being used.Spokeswoman Heather Nauert told AFP the solution is a return to United Nations-led talks in Geneva and for “Russia to live up to its commitments in that regards.”Washington has more than 2,000 troops inside Syria working with anti-Jihadist Kurdish and Arab fighters, and flies air strikes against the Islamists. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the jet was downed near the town of Saraqib in Idlib and the pilot parachuted to the ground. He was killed clashing with rebels as they tried to take him hostage, said the Britain-based Observatory.“There have been dozens of Russian air strikes in the area over the past 24 hours. This plane was also carrying out raids there,” said Abdel Rahman. The Observatory said 20 people, including eight children, were killed on Saturday during a bombardment on Saraqib and surrounding villages.Syria’s uprising broke out in 2011 with protests against Assad’s rule but has since morphed into a complex war drawing in global powers.Moscow began conducting air strikes in Syria in September 2015, and its intervention has swung the nearly seven-year conflict firmly in the favour of its ally in Damascus.Opposition factions have shot down Syrian regime planes in the past, but the downing of Russian aircraft is much rarer.Turkey shot down a Russian warplane in November 2015, leading to the worst crisis in ties between the two countries since the end of the Cold WarIn August 2016, a Russian military helicopter was shot down over Syria, killing all five people on board.Deadly fire on Turkish tankRussia has been spearheading a more than year-long diplomatic push to try to freeze the fighting in coordination with fellow regime ally Iran and rebel backer Turkey.Ankara has supported an array of rebel groups to fight Syria’s government, the Islamic State jihadist group, and Kurdish militia that it has blacklisted as “terrorists.”On January 20, Turkey and allied rebel fighters began an offensive on the Syrian enclave of Afrin, held by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).Seven Turkish soldiers were killed on Saturday as part of the assault, including five who died in a single attack on a tank, the Turkish army said. The losses mark the highest toll in a single day for the Turkish army in operation “Olive Branch.”The Observatory has also counted 104 allied rebels and 102 YPG fighters killed since the offensive began, as well as 68 civilians.Ankara has denied targeting civilians as part of its Afrin offensive.Mourners on Saturday gathered in Afrin to commemorate victims of the operation, including female fighter Barin Kobani whose badly mutilated body appeared in a shocking video earlier this week. The footage sparked accusations by her family and Kurdish officials that she was “defiled” by Turkish-backed rebels. The opposition’s government-in-exile said Saturday it had opened an investigation into the matter.Thousands of people protested on Saturday in France against Turkey’s operation “Olive Branch,” gathering in Strasbourg and Paris to condemn the assault.

Yesterday, Reddit raised $300 million in new Series D funding from investors led by China’s Tencent. The company now values at $3 billion, in the lines of tech giants like Google and Facebook. Until now, Reddit has received $550 million in total funding. Other investors include Sequoia, Fidelity, Andreessen Horowitz, Quiet Capital, VY and Snoop Dogg. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, in an interview with CNBC said, “One of the things that’s been very important to us is that we can now assure advertisers that you are going to have a positive experience on Reddit and potentially even a new experience, a new way of connecting with customers.” The investment makes sense because video game is one of the more popular categories at Reddit, and Tencent invests a lot in video game makers. Currently, Tencent owns 40 percent of “Fortnite” creator Epic Games. “They are investors in lots of video games companies,” Huffman said. “And video games are one category that’s really popular on Reddit.” With this investment round, Huffman said he hopes to compete in online advertising with Facebook and Google. “When we are talking about competing for ad dollars, of course, we are talking about Facebook and Google, who take up the vast majority of ad spend.” Not all is good however, as some Redditors are already protesting the funding by Tencent, considering it is Chinese, and Reddit is blocked in China, for allowing users to have a free, unedited speech. People are also speculating how China might have a chance to take over the US in the cold war. A comment on Hacker news reads, “Tencent, a Chinese firm has meaningful ownership of American youth. 12% Snap 7.5% Spotify 40% Epic Games 100% Riot Games 100% Supercell 5% Reddit. Hollywood has also been moving in this direction, with a lot of Chinese investment in the studios, and blockbusters adding special scenes with Chinese actors and locations. What does it mean for America when it’s no longer the owner or creator of culture? It’s historically one of our largest (and most important) exports. I’m not sure if that claim to fame is a net positive for the world, but the changing of this guard will certainly have a local impact.” Some other users expressed concerns, if this move may slowly start to repress anti-China content on Reddit. “The only issue I can see from ownership is if they start to censor the platform. I doubt they’ll do any overt censoring (eg. “no talking about what happened at Tiananmen Square in 1989), but I wouldn’t be surprised if they do subtle manipulation like silently deemphasizing anti-China content, or emphasizing anti-western content (eg. infighting, failure of western democracy). The latter probably would even be good for the site (in terms of engagement) as outrage drive clicks.”, reads a comment on Hacker News.
