The Verge suggests that although the OnePlus 7 Pro will support 5G, the company is downplaying it, given the near-term limits of the next generation network. Previously, OnePlus had said that it would be among the first to have 5G in a phone — but that the device would not come to the US. The company did not immediately respond to a request to comment. OnePlus is reportedly planning to introduce a new premium phone in 2019 that supports 5G and features new display technology. Called the OnePlus 7 Pro, the phone will have a display that’s “super smooth and very crisp,” OnePlus CEO Pete Lau told The Verge. The report speculates that the display may support a 90Hz refresh rate that’s about 33 percent faster than most other smartphones. The faster refresh rate may have been foreshadowed by Lau in a tweet from last week: 1:38

Corsair, a computer peripherals and hardware company, on Wednesday said it’s acquired Origin PC. Origin PC specializes in hand-built, personalized computers designed to optimize the gaming experience. The companies plan to expand Corsair’s iCUE software ecosystem into Origin PC’s systems, according to a press release. Corsair says this will offer gamers systemwide lighting synchronization and performance monitoring. In addition, the new range of Corsair Hydro X Series custom cooling will soon be found in select Origin PC systems.Financial terms of the deal weren’t revealed, but Corsair said Origin will remain a separate brand. All existing warranties, purchases and support are unaffected, according to the release. Corsair will continue producing its own product line — Vengeance PC, Corsair One and the Corsair One Pro — and brands. Andy Paul, founder and CEO of Corsair, said one of the reasons the company acquired Origin PC was the desire to reach more North American customers who wanted to buy systems, not build them. “With Origin PC’s expertise in personalized custom gaming systems and Corsair’s strength in performance PC hardware and the iCUE software ecosystem, we’re excited to combine our efforts to create new world-class gaming experiences for PC gamers,” Paul said in the release.Origin PC CEO Kevin Wasielewski said Corsair was a “fantastic partner” to help the company move forward. “With a complete range of enthusiast PC products, Origin PC and Corsair are uniquely placed to create amazing new systems that make the experience of owning a personalized custom gaming PC better than ever,” Wasielewski said in the release. 2 Now playing: Watch this: 1:30 Origin PC brings a 16-inch gaming laptop to CES 2019

Photo: AFPUS president Donald Trump on Thursday announced the surprise departure of his spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, after a combative tenure that saw her all-but-kill off traditional White House briefings to journalists.Sanders has been one of Trump’s most loyal foot soldiers, almost constantly at his side during his tumultuous two and a half years at the White House and during the campaign before.Trump announced her exit in a tweet and did not name a replacement.”After 3 1/2 years, our wonderful Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be leaving the White House at the end of the month and going home to the Great State of Arkansas,” Trump said, adding that he hoped she would run for governor of her state.Sharp, sometimes acid-tongued, Sanders has not been prone to the almost comic slip-ups that embarrassed predecessors in the job, such as short-lived Trump spokesman Anthony Scaramucci.But she has earned a reputation for bruising clashes with journalists whom she finds over-critical — often echoing her boss’s attacks on unfavorable coverage as “Fake News.”At a White House event Thursday on reintegration into society for ex-prisoners, Trump interrupted proceedings to summon the “warrior” Sanders from the audience and lavish praise on her record.Calling her “a friend, a woman, a great, great magnificent person,” Trump said, “she’s very popular.”In fact, Sanders, 36, has a sometimes bitter relationship with the White House press corps and is seen as responsible for the demise of the formal daily briefing — practically an institution under previous presidents.Pressed during one particularly combative briefing to distance herself from Trump’s characterization of the media as the “enemy of the people,” Sanders refused.The last time she took to the podium for a back-and-forth with reporters in the White House briefing room was 11 March. Instead, she communicates largely through interviews on the president’s favorite TV network Fox News and short, informal briefings with other journalists outdoors.She has also been accused of telling repeated lies to reporters, although she denies this.Despite Sanders’ damaged reputation in media circles, there had been no hint from the administration that her exit was imminent.Sanders’ father Mike Huckabee is a former Republican governor of Arkansas, making her something of a member of conservative royalty.No tearsCalled up to the microphone by Trump at the ex-prisoners’ event, a visibly emotional Sanders said she would “try not to get emotional, because I know crying can make us look weak.”In a brief address, the spokeswoman praised Trump and her colleagues at the White House, saying she “loved every minute” of the job.”I’m going to continue to be one of the most outspoken and loyal supporters of the president and his agenda and I know he’s going to have an incredible six more years and get a lot more done,” she said.She made no mention of the media or the role of journalists at the White House.Although Sanders is often blamed for the White House’s killing off of the press briefing, she has been serving a president who from the start decided to tear up the media playbook.With Trump communicating directly via Twitter and other social media to tens of millions of people every day, the traditional role of a press office putting out statements has become partly redundant.And while journalists now rarely hold the administration’s feet to the fire in the calm, organized setting of the briefing room, they have extraordinary access to Trump himself.Weekly, the president holds his own impromptu briefings in the Oval Office or out on the South Lawn before boarding his Marine One helicopter. In contrast to real press conferences, these occasions can be chaotic and are rarely carried on live television.Sanders may not speak much, but she is always there — in the background.

It is overwhelmingly geared toward individual users with more than one Apple device. The problem is that the same service used to sync music and television shows is also used to share calendars and documents between devices. Differentiating professional data, contacts, calendars and documents from personal ones, while possible, can require more time and effort than some entrepreneurs are willing to put in. Group-sharing options — for instance, syncing calendars among co-workers — are limited, and when they are present they’re restricted to other iCloud users. Not only does this require your colleagues to own an Apple device, they also must be using a compatible operating system and have an iCloud account set up.The iCloud also lacks document sharing capability. For limited document storage — say you need to access a document on the road from your iPhone — it can work, but the document has to be stored in your personal iCloud. Other business sharing solutions do it better.To some, it might seem as though Apple is trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to business file sharing. Other team-based document sharing solutions such as San Mateo, Calif.-based Sugar Sync or Google Apps can usually be easier to set up and more flexible.The mobile version of Google Apps — which can be accessed on an iPhone, iPad or even an iPod Touch — is fast, stable, device-agnostic and allows for first-rate team access. All it takes is to bookmark your Google Apps account homepage in your iPhone or click on the Apps button in the Google iPhone app to create a superior solution to the iCloud.Given its limited scope and that there are so many other ways to access files from the Web, why bother with iCloud? Or maybe, more simply, it’s rediscovering a sense of purpose.It is no longer enough to build new technologies just because we can. We’re living in an attention economy that is being driven, almost entirely, by technology. We have access today to more information than we can possibly absorb, and all of those sources are competing to try to get top of mind with us. If they can get us addicted, then they’ve got a business model.But, we’re also seeing the downside of this tech explosion, and it isn’t pretty. We are more isolated, more segmented and unhappier than ever before as tech has moved away from solving real problems.Related: Amazon Patents Wristband to Precisely Track Its Warehouse WorkersWe need the tech industry to refocus some of that effort on solving real world problems again.The dark side of techMore than 30 years ago, Georgia Tech professor Melvin Kranzberg compiled a list of what he called the “Six Laws of Technology,” which were intended to address potential social unrest related to the growing reach, even then, of technologies. His first law, that technology is not good or bad, but it is also not neutral, has become a measuring stick for tech policy in the era of Big Data, social media and always-on connectivity.That was in the 1980s, and since then technology has only become more pervasive.As of 2017, the average person spent more than two hours per day on various social media platforms, according to influencer marketing agency Mediakix.There will soon be more than 5,000 GB of data on every single person on the planet stored somewhere on the cloud where advertisers, corporations, governments and others can leverage it, a Digital Universe study found.And, incredibly, Facebook recently introduced a version of its Messenger app intended for kids aged six to 12.All this despite knowing that this increasing reliance on technology can be bad for our health. In a recent, ground-breaking piece in The Atlantic, Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State, shared research showing that since the advent of the smartphone the rates of depression and suicide have skyrocketed among teenagers.Related: The ‘Father of the iPod’ Says Tech Addiction Would Worry Steve Jobs if he Were Alive TodayThere are two different forces at play here. One is the addictive, dopamine-driving behavioral design of applications that tether us to our technologies. This is what makes you keep that phone right next to you all day long and look at everything that pops up. The second thing is this ability for users to post content online, potentially anonymously or in ways that abuse other people, with little constraint. Too often, this allows people to say things they wouldn’t normally say in front of actual people, leading to more bullying behavior.How tech can helpThe technology industry certainly deserves some blame for this cultural conundrum but it also deserves some credit for not turning a blind eye to this issue. For example, Facebook recently rolled out an artificial intelligence feature that claims to be able to spot suicidal tendencies in users’ social media activity before even their doctors do. The company hopes the technology will help prevent suicides by getting people help before they even know they need it.It’s a good first step, but there’s more the industry can do.Create guidelines: It may be time for the industry to create behavioral health guidelines for their products, in order to both police its own practices and encourage the creation of apps that are built in a way to reinforce and encourage wellness, versus to try to take advantage of more negative behaviors. These would be voluntary guidelines that would police what the industry is doing, to prevent abusive technologies.Related: Study: Constantly Texting and Checking Social Media Makes You ‘Morally Shallow’Promote distance: Two hours of social media usage per day is a lot, but it still pales in comparison to the seven-plus hours that the average person spends watching television. Yet, there are proven mental health benefits to disconnecting from time to time. The industry should be supportive of this practice, encouraging users to take digital sabbaticals on a regular basis in order to maintain a happy and engaged user base. It doesn’t even need to be a full break, as having access to so-called “safe spaces” has been proven to make people happier in today’s increasingly hostile internet.Provide tools: How can users protect themselves against the negative effects of technology? How do they put up barriers against it? The industry can’t stand silent as this issue spirals out of control. Smart tech companies should step up now, acknowledge the problem and offer tools to help their users become healthy customers of their products.We still have a long way to go, but there are tech companies that are working to solve this very real-world problem. One example is Spry Labs, a Cincinnati-based development firm that leads specialized workshops and innovation sessions dedicated to solving society’s big problems. (Spry is a project of Cintrifuse, where I am a founding member.) This past summer, it hosted a hackathon focused on solving the opioid crisis, and on March 10 it is leading a session to help the tech industry deal with suicides.Technology certainly didn’t create the problem of suicide, and it won’t be the last time that we as a society have to deal with it. But, by taking small steps to help address the problem, the tech industry can turn its market power into a force for good, helping to make all of us happier and healthier in the process.
