Doctor Who Underrated Villain of the Week Headless Monks

first_img You know Daleks and Davros and Missy the Master, Angels and Silence hell-bent on disaster. But do you recall the most underrated Doctor Who villains of all? Each week, I will dig into the depths of the Whoniverse to examine one rejected, misjudged, or altogether forgotten big bad. In honor of the Twelfth Doctor’s new monastic foe, let’s take a look back at the Order of the Headless.via BBCHEADLESS MONKSFirst appearance: [Prequel to] “A Good Man Goes to War” (2011)—season 6, episode 7Home planet: N/ADoctor: EleventhCompanions: Amy Pond, Rory WilliamsAmy has been abducted and replaced with a semi-sentient Flesh duplicate, while the real Amy is held captive by Madame Kovarian on secret asteroid base Demon’s Run, where she is about to give birth to Melody Pond. All caught up now?In this mid-season finale, writer Steven Moffat takes audiences on a timey-wimey journey across time and space as the Doctor and Rory go on the hunt for Amy and her baby.First, though, they’ll have to get past the Order of the Headless, a religious sect which listens to their hearts, not their heads—hence the name (and the decapitations). The deadly warriors, always hidden beneath velvety cowls, are incapable of being fooled or intimidated. That is, until the Doctor and his bevy of allies launch a surprise attack on the base, freeing Amy and recovering Melody.Mentioned in passing during the fifth season (“The Time of Angels”), Headless Monks make their debut during an exchange with Dorium Maldovar in the prequel to “A Good Man Goes to War”: The black marketeer gives two friars the brain of a Judoon, warning them against messing with the Doctor and his friends. The mysterious Monks, however, take no heed and later assist Madame Kovarian in her crusade against the Time Lord—a tragic battle that left Strax dead (I’m not crying, you’re crying). These enigmatic soldiers are really not to be messed with: Some fear that merely glancing beneath their cowl results in execution; it remains a Level One Heresy, punishable by death, to lower the hood of a Headless Monk. That doesn’t stop Colonel Manton, the human leader of operations at the Church on Demon’s Run, who, “by the divine grant of the Papal Mainframe herself, on this one and only occasion,” removes the veil to “show you the truth.”The uncomfortable truth that there really is no head—just the skin of the neck tied off like a balloon.A sort of ersatz monster-of-the-week, the Headless Monks don’t get their due; the character is mostly a distraction, never to be seen again in the Whoniverse. (Unless you consider these new cult-ish Monks a separate, fully intact (if not rotting) faction of the Order of the Headless that, instead of shooting balls of energy from their hands, trap people in a highly advanced virtual reality.) all of Doctor Who now for free with your Amazon Prime membership.
